The measurement of surface roughness is not as straight forward as most other engineering measurements such as length or angle or hardness and in order to get good accuracy, expensive instrument are required. These are often unsuitable for workshop use, where roughness of machined surface can usually be assessed conveniently and with sufficient reliability using visual and tactile comparison with a standard set of surface machined in the same way.
There problem are solved by this range of Surface Roughness Comparison Specimens, they are inexpensive and simple to use, widely used in many different applications.
As standardized in ISO2632/-1975
This set contains standards for the six most important machine methods in the prevalent "AA" values. These surface roughness is used to compare and determine the degree of the surface finish by comparison method and eye estimation or magnifying glass. The surface rough contrast blocks is made of 45 super carbon steel except the GCr15 which is using to plat lapping the sample block.
All 30 specimens are calibrated in μ"AA" (arithmetic average) and in the metric equivalents um Ra.
